What is alpha arbutin?

Alpha arbutin is a naturally occurring molecule extracted from the dried leaves of bearberry, blueberry, cranberry and pear tree. Studies have shown that alpha arbutin can brighten skin tone, is an effective skin lightening ingredient, and can also reduce hyperpigmentation, dark spots, discoloration and uneven skin tone.

Compared with other skin whitening agents, alpha arbutin has many benefits. It is generally suitable for all skin types and will not make your skin sensitive to the sun. When used with other skin lightening agents such as kojic acid, vitamin C, licorice root or tranexamic acid, the effect will be better.

Alpha arbutin is different from beta arbutin, and beta arbutin is also referred to as arbutin for short. Both help to brighten the complexion, and although alpha-arbutin is generally well tolerated, it is always a good idea to patch test a new skin care product before using it for the first time.

The characteristics of alpha arbutin

Sun protection properties: Arbutin can reduce the degree of skin darkening after sun exposure by preventing the production of tyrosinase.

Gentle to the skin: Although other skin lightening agents can dry and irritate the skin, arbutin is less irritating. "Because the active ingredient of arbutin is released slowly, compared with other skin lightening agents, it is less irritating and more suitable for people with sensitive skin.

Improve uneven skin tone: Because arbutin inhibits tyrosinase (an enzyme that helps melanin production), it can prevent or even help lighten dark spots, thereby making skin tone more even.

Use it safely with other skin care products: There are no known negative interactions between arbutin and other skin care ingredients.

Can be used twice a day: For best results, arbutin can be used in the morning and evening.

Safer than hydroquinone: Hydroquinone is a "miracle" skin lightening ingredient-until the FDA declares that it is carcinogenic (when taken orally, rather than topically). Although hydroquinone produces pigmentation and melanin by killing, arbutin inhibits enzymes that stimulate pigment producing cells.

Effectively lighten scars: Just like its ability to lighten dark spots, arbutin can also lighten those rosy-purple acne scars that exist for a long time after the acne disappears.

Brighten the skin: Arbutin can prevent the formation of dark spots and has a brightening effect on the skin.

Does not make skin sensitive to the sun: When using exfoliating acids, retinoids or vitamin C products to reduce hyperpigmentation and dark spots, you may find that your skin is more sensitive when exposed to the sun's ultraviolet rays. This is not the case with alpha arbutin.
