Ceramides are a class of amide compounds formed by dehydration of long-chain fatty acids and amino groups of sphingosine. They mainly include ceramide phosphatidylcholine and ceramide phosphatidylethanolamine. Phospholipids are the main components of cell membranes, and 40% to 50% of sebum in the stratum corneum is composed of ceramides. Ceramides are the main part of the intercellular matrix and play an important role in maintaining water balance in the stratum corneum.
Ceramides are present in all eukaryotic cells and play an important regulatory role in cell differentiation, proliferation, apoptosis, aging, and other life activities. Ceramide, as the main component of intercellular lipids in the skin stratum corneum, not only acts as a second messenger molecule in the sphingomyelin pathway, but also plays an important role in the formation process of the epidermal stratum corneum, maintaining skin barrier, moisturizing, anti-aging, whitening, and disease treatment.
