Superoxide dismutase (SOD) is an enzyme that promotes the decomposition of toxic superoxide radicals into ordinary molecular oxygen (O2) or hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Hydrogen peroxide is also destructive, but less destructive than superoxide radicals, and it is also degraded by catalase.
