Octinoxate, also known as octyl methoxycinnamate (Or "OMC") and ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate, octinoxate is a common ingredient in sunscreens, shampoos, lipsticks and other products.

Type of Ingredients: Chemical UV filter

OMC is the most common UVB sunscreen on the market today and is widely used. As a UV absorber, there is a large conjugated π bond in the molecule of OMC. This conjugated structure can be regarded as a benzene ring as the core, one side extends to the oxygen atom in the substituted methoxy group, and the other side extends to the other side. Double bond and ester group in one substituent. This conjugated structure determines that the substance has the property of absorbing ultraviolet rays. OMC can absorb ultraviolet rays in the wavelength range of 280-320nm, and has a maximum absorption at 311nm, so it has a good protective effect on UVB, and has high absorption rate, good safety, and oil solubility, so it is widely used in daily chemicals, plastics, rubber As an oil-soluble liquid UVB absorber, it can be compounded with various sunscreens. The toxicity is extremely small and relatively safe. Animal experiments believe that it may affect the effect of estrogen, and the concentration limit is 10%.

★How does Octinoxate protect the skin from UV radiation?

Octinoxate works by absorbing UVB rays and converting them into less harmful energy, reducing the amount of radiation that penetrates the skin. This helps prevent sunburn and contributes to overall sun protection performance.

★Are there any environmental concerns with Octinoxate?

Yes. Octinoxate is highly toxic to coral symbionts (Symbiodinium sp.), causing cell damage and bleaching even at low concentrations. It is banned in marine parks in Hawaii, Palau, Thailand, and Key West.

★Can Octinoxate be used in "reef-safe" sunscreens?

No. Due to documented coral toxicity, Octinoxate is prohibited in "reef-safe" certified sunscreens. Many regions (Hawaii, Palau, US Virgin Islands, Thailand) have banned its use in marine parks.

★What is the difference between Octinoxate and Octocrylene?

Both are UV-B filters, but Octocrylene also photostabilizes avobenzone. Octinoxate has higher coral toxicity than Octocrylene. Octocrylene is not banned as widely as Octinoxate in marine parks.

★Is Octinoxate listed in China cosmetic ingredient catalog?

Yes, Octinoxate (INCI: Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate, CAS 5466-77-3) is officially included in China Inventory of Used Cosmetic Ingredients 2021 Edition. It is an officially permitted UVB sunscreen filter in China Cosmetic Safety Technical Specifications, fully compliant for domestic formula filing, global export declaration and cross-border sun protection product registration.

★What is the legal maximum usage concentration of Octinoxate worldwide?

China & EU regulated maximum dosage: ≤7.5%. It matches global mainstream sunscreen safety limits, stable in oil-phase cosmetic system, low skin irritation, and certified safe by international cosmetic safety authorities.

★Does Octinoxate comply with EU, US FDA and ASEAN cosmetic regulations?

Fully registered in EU CosIng database, meets EU EC 1223/2009 safety standards, US FDA OTC sunscreen ingredient requirements and ASEAN raw material filing regulations. Complete regulatory documents support worldwide customs clearance and brand product filing.
